About Pencil & Oak

Work out the details before the work begins.

Pencil & Oak is an independent site with free tools and practical guides for planning decorative wall projects.

From an idea to a plan you can check

A wall can look straightforward until a strip meets an outlet, a window interrupts the spacing, or new trim needs to meet an existing baseboard. We help you work through those decisions before committing to materials or cutting.

Our current focus is board and batten. The calculator helps you compare layouts, position fixtures and take away placement measurements and finished piece lengths. The guides explain choices the drawing cannot settle, including wall texture, backing and trim transitions.

What the tools and guides can tell you

We explain the assumptions behind our tools and link to sources where factual claims need support. A suggested arrangement is a planning aid to check against your own wall, materials and installation method.

Room illustrations are created to explain ideas. They are not photographs of our renovations or evidence that a pictured installation has been built or tested.
